LVISD Announces Cops on a Bus Safety Program
La Vernia Independent School District is joining forces with the La Vernia Police Department on a new bus and transportation safety initiative.
Cops on a Bus is an interactive program designed to help keep La Vernia ISD students safe at school and on bus routes by promoting regular safety training and familiarity with officers from the La Vernia Police Department and the Wilson County Precinct 3 Constables’ Office. LVPD officers and constables will ride La Vernia ISD buses with students on a variety of bus routes throughout the school year. Students will be able to ask accompanying officers questions about law enforcement, get to know their School Resource Officers (SROs), and learn safety and security tips that they can follow and encourage their classmates to adopt as well.
“This partnership will be beneficial to both our students and our community. It takes a village to raise a child and our law enforcement officers want to be a positive and productive part of that process,” said Sergeant Donald Keil of the La Vernia Police Department.
Additionally, this new partnership represents a proactive way to address community safety concerns beyond the classroom and bus routes. By increasing the frequency of student interactions with police officers and constables as part of their normal school day, the program is intended to help students feel safe when approaching a law enforcement officer at any time.
“We are so grateful that the La Vernia Police Department proposed this new program to us,” said Michael Duffek, LVISD Director of Safety and Security. “Along with meeting the safety and security needs of our students on a personal level, this program will also enhance student safety by allowing officers to monitor community member behaviors around our buses.”
Officers who participate in the Cops on a Bus program with La Vernia ISD will be able to record data about traffic around buses when they are stopped. This will help officers hold drivers responsible for safe driving behaviors when students are getting on or off a school bus.
This new program reflects the district’s ongoing dedication to the safety and security of every La Vernia ISD student. The district is committed to working with the community to protect our children and empowering our students to play an active role in their own safety.
