Kadrmas Named 2019 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalist

JMK

La Vernia High School Senior John Michael Kadrmas was named a Semifinalist in the 64th Annual National Merit® Scholarship Program by officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

One of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists recognized by the NMSC in September, Kadrmas has an opportunity to continue in the competition for the nearly 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million that will be offered next spring. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state.

“John Michael Kadrmas is a talented young man, who not only excels academically, but also athletically in football and baseball,” said La Vernia High School Principal Kim Martin. “He is the epitome of what it means to be a La Vernia Bear.”

From the group of Semifinalists, close to 15,000 are expected to attain Finalist standing, of which they will be notified in February 2019. About half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title. Merit Scholar designees are selected on the basis of their skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies, without regard to gender, race, ethnic origin, or religious preference.

“La Vernia ISD could not be more proud of John Michael Kadrmas,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Trent Lovette. “His ambition, character, and drive for success motivate us all to strive for excellence alongside him, and we anticipate more great things from him in the future.”

2019 National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced beginning in April and concluding in July. The recipients will join some 338,000 other distinguished students who have earned the Merit Scholar title.
